How Can You Set Out a Clear Employee Value Proposition
How Can You Set Out a Clear Employee Value Proposition Every company in the world needs a clearly set out employee value proposition. You need to clearly define the unique offerings your company in return for the unique capabilities an employee would bring. To help you construct a clear EVP framework and message, our 10 employer branding experts will delve into the ways in which companies can set out a genuine employee value proposition. Jörgen Sundberg The trouble with most EVPs is that theyre copy and paste jobs. Perhaps this is because many companies arent very differentiated in general, as in you can work for any bank, Big Four, tech company doing the exact same job and enjoying the same type of employee experience. If your organization is doing something truly remarkable and different, your EVP will be a great deal easier to put together. If its just another business, youll have to dig deep and find what truly is unique. And dont be afraid to use nuggets that might put some people off, at the end of the day we all save time if only the right people apply to your company ultimately, thats the job of a clear EVP. Jörgen Sundberg, Employer Brand Consultant CEO, Link Humans Carmen Collins What I think is most intriguing, and says the most about our culture, is that Ciscoâs âOur People Dealâ is an idea came from an employee. This manager noticed that Cisco said we wanted to be the #1 IT company in the world, but we needed an employee experience that reflected that as well. Finding people that shared her insights, the group started by listening â" which, as a social media professional is something I always encourage! I think thatâs a great place for any company to start â" what are your employees already saying? What kind of company do they want to work for? What does a great day look like at your company? At Cisco, the answers to that question formed the three pillars of Our People Deal â" and we have a video that sums it up nicely. Carmen Collins, Social Media Talent Brand Lead, Cisco Estela Vazquez Perez Ask HR, targeted talent, and your sponsors. HR has the generic offer. Top it up with business unitâs unique add-ons for the selected market. Your EVP is your offer, the deal people will get if joining. The integrated value is what makes it unique to your company. You need to contrast it with data of what the market wants. If you can connect the EVP to the purpose of the company, you will be close to identifying key intentions the company has for people, these will be your pillars. Bring your c-suite along because the will add a desired state for the brand. You will have to communicate if your EVP is compelling enough to attract and retain people or investments are required. As an example, when I was a newly grad in marketing, my first employer wanted a hybrid of marketing and technology, they up their regular EVP by sponsoring my MBA in Information Technology. It was a good deal for both. Estela Vazquez Perez, Global Employment Brand Director, Royal Bank of Canada Ton Rodenburg At the heart of every employer value proposition should be the heart of the company; its soul / spirit. The energy, authenticity and distinction in the building blocks of identity are: Purpose (why), core values (how), core competences (what) and ambitions (what). All attributes should express the brand values as much as possible. For example, if creativity is a core value than everything from HR, building and facilities, products and services, etc. should be all as distinctly creative as possible. Always see to it that all contact points in a brand/company are aligned with itâs values. This flavors the companyâs culture, makes it a little idiosyncratic and ultimately makes it stand out. This will help attract great people, as they feel their personal values and what drives them are reflected in the companyâs values. Ton Rodenburg, Employer Branding Strategy Director, ARA M/V Human Resource Communications Audra Knight Whatâs most important is to do your research and make sure your EVP pillars resonate with your current employees. As I mentioned, cultures can change within departments and your EVP pillars may need to be updated. Regular check-ins or surveys is key â" not just once a year. Audra Knight, Recruitment Operations Manager, Tenable Hannah Fleishman Focus on being clear and concise when creating your employee value proposition. By talking with employees, youâll have a strong understanding of the themes that make your company a uniquely great place to work. But youâll also have a ton of ideas. It can be difficult to narrow those ideas down to just a few core values but itâs worth it. You want an employee value proposition that sticks with people, one thatâs easy for candidates to remember. The best way to do that is by being concise. Hannah Fleishman, Inbound Recruiting Manager, HubSpot Sarang Brahme I believe, building, communicating and integrating EVP is a strategic process â" not only for HR but also for business stakeholders. It involves analysing employee data related to engagement, onboarding and recruiting to identify trends. Once we gather the information, we need to design an authentic EVP which can truly be endorsed by employees. Aligning EVP to internal and external HR messages is key to build a trustworthy employer brand. The EVP also needs to be part of everyday business with strong support from management and leadership to ensure continuity. Sarang Brahme, Global Social Recruiting Talent Brand Manager, Capgemini Shaunda Zilich If you really think about it the term âEVPâ is really over used making it very complicated and âclear as mudâ. The reality is EVP, at its core, is one thing and very simple. People use EVP to describe many things but the reality is that it is as simple as âwhy insert company name?â When you answer this simple question you will come up with the âEVPâ. Shaunda Zilich, Global Employment Brand Leader, GE Jaclyn Campbell I interpreted this question as to how an EVP can be delivered. The key to a clear EVP is to ensure the messaging is consistent. The story of your EVP is probably best told on your careers page as this is where the audience will expect to read âwhyâ or the âpurposeâ your organisation exists. It can also be expressed in less formal formats through social media, the recruitment process (such as interviewing, onboarding), or even a touch point as simple as your neighbour asking you at a BBQ what you do for a living and if you like your company [insert EVP here]. Jaclyn Campbell, Employer Brand Consultant, Optus Jennifer Johnston Crafting a compelling EVP starts with answering five questions. 1) âWhat is the core DNA of our culture as envisioned by our founders 2) âWhat is still true of that culture today?â This is how you arrive at authenticity. 3) Then temper that with, âWhere do we want to be tomorrow?â Itâs good to be aspirational because it can help you evolve. 4) Next, you want to make sure itâs differentiated so ask, âWhat is true of us that is uniquely us?â 5) And finally ask, âIs our message simple so itâs easy for everyone to align to and remember?â Jennifer Johnston, Senior Director of Global Employer Branding, Salesforce

Self-worth, Abundance, And The Goddess Called YOU
Self-worth, Abundance, And The Goddess Called YOU Youre a goddamn Goddess. Now, stop apologizing. Get over it, and embrace your place in the world. What Im saying is that its time to break out of the bonds that have held women back for so long. Based on social expectations, so-called norms, and thousands of years of a predominantly patriarchal society, its time for the growth-limiting path weve been on to end. Like many if not most of us, Ive had an inner struggle going on. Its about all the news weve heard over the last 18 or so months. Sexual misconduct on the part of men. There, see, I just did it again. Its not misconduct, its ASSAULT. My struggle was specifically about the role that women might play in . . . encouraging? . . . assault. Im being brutally honest here we do in fact sometimes if not often dress and present ourselves to impress, even to get a response. And yes, it does go beyond dressing for success. Its a muddled, silent conversation, mixed with frustration, anger, guilt, confusion, and . . . a LOT more anger. I know, because Ive been on the receiving end of such very uninvited assault. Are you ready to embrace real self-worth, abundance, and the Goddess called you? Read on. Getting A New Clarity Sometimes, if you search long enough and your desire is strong enough, the answers finally come. For me, that happened recently when Ms Career Girl shared an article by Heidi Stevens from the Chicago Tribune. Pardon the long quote, but theres no way to relate what she said in fewer words: I wonder why we understand ownership so much better when weâre talking about a personâs prized possessions than when weâre talking about a womanâs body. Iâve never once heard a man explain away a burglary by questioning why a homeowner bothered taking such good care of his house if not to entice others to break in. Lawn mowed just so. Solid oak front door. Three-car garage. Why do you make your house so attractive if you donât want someone to break in and start taking stuff? Iâve never once heard a man explain away a carjacking by questioning why a driver bothered driving such a nice car. Why are you driving a Lexus if you donât want someone to take it from you? You even keep it all shiny and new-looking. You donât think that sends some kind of message? Finally. Something that makes sense. As I read it I felt a physical release. The conflict is over. In no way was it my fault just because I was doing the best I could with the body Id been given. My body. Damage Done, And Undone With that kind of inner turmoil going on, its pretty difficult to see and reach your potential. Think about how those kinds of thoughts effect your feelings of worthiness. About how much its limited your feelings of self-worth, and kept you from understanding the Goddess that resides in you, and each of us. It might take some time to undo the programming and damage. Or, maybe youll respond as I did and have an abrupt moment of just being over it. Either way, getting back to the real you and understanding and accepting yourself for who you are, no apologies, is something youve got to do. Theres peace out there. And a calm confidence that awaits you. If youre challenged with this new perspective, I recommend you take a look at Ava Miles Goddesses Deserve The Gs. The author leads you through a transformative journey that will bring you face to face with the Goddess called you. Lets Move On Its time to insist that those guilty of all things that have held women back be fully accountable and responsible for their actions. From discrimination, all the way to assault and rape, its the perpetrator who must be called out. And, its time for women to claim, insist, on their rightful place at the table. Whats that look like, you ask? Heres some of the tips from Taking Your Place At The Table. When a rule, law, or regulation doesnt make sense, ask people why its there. If their explanation doesnt make sense, work to change the rule. When you need help, approach the highest-ranking person you believe can help. Dont let impressive-sounding titles or official-looking buildings intimidate you. When people tell you, Youve pushed enough boundaries, pay no attention. Wherever theres a boundary that doesnt serve people, it needs to be pushed aside or dismantled. When youre fed up with something, say so to the people in charge. Otherwise, they may never realize or care that youre dissatisfied. Thats just a sample. Check out the book for some very effective insights into stepping up and claiming what you deserve. Including respect. Tomorrow Starts Today I like to say that tomorrow is going to get here whether we like it or not, and tomorrow doesnt particularly care what our life looks like when we get there. Thats up to us. By what we choose right here, right now. If youre tired of the way things have been, now is the time to start creating . . . demanding something better.

Dont Use a Resume Template if Want to Land a New Job
Dont Use a Resume Template if Want to Land a New Job Every wonder why you donât get called up for an interview? It could be that you are using a resume or CV based on a template. Your resume probably gets about 5-10 seconds before the person screening it decides to read on or to chuck in the bin. HR people, recruiters, hiring managers see hundreds of resumes every day and nothing bores them more than another template resume. The goal of your resume is to stand out from all the other job seekers and be picked for an interview; if you are using the same template as all the other hopefuls you will achieve neither objective. Still not convinced? Here are a few reasons not to use a resume template: Same as everyone else: Employers have developed a trained eye for spotting resume templates. Recruiters can spot them a mile away. The two benefits of using a resume is that it requires little time and effort to write your document. Basically, itâs the lazy way of doing it. What type of signal do you think these copy and paste skills send to the hiring manager? I would think that this applicant, if hired, would always look for quick and dirty ways of solving problems. I might be cynical here but can you afford to risk that? A lot of the templates out there are sub standard: Who created all the templates on the Internet in the first place? Nobody knows, but the templates are highly recommended and are supposedly written by an expert. Whoever these âexpertsâ are shall remain one of mankindâs great mysteries; I can only establish that most of the templates are very poor. Unless you are in the career industry, telling which resumes are good, bad and ugly will be very difficult and not advisable. You are selling yourself short: Surely you deserve the best resume there is and not just a run-of-the-mill template ripped off from the web? By really taking the time to making your own resume, you will enhance your life skills as you have to master writing sales copy, creating a salesy layout and a format that is pleasing on the eye. It will take time to make a great resume but the finished product can be used throughout your career (just update it every now and then!). So what is a job seeker to do? Hereâs my plan. Go out and Google resumes in your field, both templates and resumes from actual people who have posted their documents publicly. Save up to 10 decent ones and start reading and getting a feel for the language, layout and formats. Then delete all the saved resumes and start with your own from a blank canvas. I assure you that you will be full of inspiration from others and instead of copying what they have written, you will now cherry pick their components and putting them on paper with your own words. Writing a resume from scratch is hard work but itâs doable for all of us and one thing is certain: it will get noticed. If I really canât do it? You can try to give your resume a complete makeover. Mash it up, throw in some synonyms, change the spacing, type fonts, headers and footers. Make it look original and hope it passes muster with the employer. Or if you are ready to spend some money, work with a professional resume writer that can put together a new and original document for you. Bottom line: Using a template will never make you stand out and chances are your application will be cut short due to your resume being the same as every other job seekerâs. I say take charge of your job search efforts and invest some time in to creating an original document that sells you effectively and put yourself in pole position for the next job! Do you use a template and has it got you any interviews? Have you created your own resume and what are the results of your applications? Share your thoughts in the comments. Image: Shutterstock

11 Ways to Improve Your Morning
11 Ways to Improve Your Morning Photo Credit â" Pexels.comIf you wake up on the wrong side of the bed every morning, it might just be more than bad luck: You are just not a morning person.Thereâs nothing wrong with being a bit down when you hear your alarm go off â" but you canât let that mood stick around as you get ready for your day. Chances are, if it lasts that long, it just might carry into your work and beyond.Thatâs why weâve gathered the following 11 ways to make your mornings a bit brighter. Add one or a handful to your routine and you just might find that early-bird frown turn upside-down just in the nick of time.1. Prepare for Mornings Before They HappenevalevalYou probably remember your mother telling you, at some point during your youth, that you should lay your clothes out and otherwise prepare for school the next morning. She was onto something. If you take time the night before to prepare your meals for the next day, get your agenda in order and even choose what youâre going to wear, youâ ll find your mornings will go much smoother.2. Stretch It OutWhen you wake up, your body has been out of commission for some time. That means you havenât been moving much and your muscles could do with a bit of waking up, too.Stretching in the morning safeguards you against feeling exhausted or lethargic all day long. Youâll get the blood flowing and energy coursing through your veins, which puts you in a better mindset for tackling your day.3. Find Your LightWhen your alarm goes off, you probably want to close your eyes and pretend the sun isnât creeping through your curtains. Fight that instinct and, instead, let the light in.Numerous studies outline the benefits of sunlight on your health, both physical and mental. Just letting the sunlight flood in â" and perhaps having your skin soak up a bit of it â" gives you a boost in your serotonin levels. Serotonin simply makes you feel good, calm and honed in on what you need to do during the day. In the morning, a dose of it i s just what you need to get going.4. Say No to SnoozingThereâs no temptation quite like the snooze button on your cellphone or alarm clock, but those extra five or 10 minutes can be seriously damaging.evalIt turns out that, by pressing snooze over and over, youâre allowing your body to fall back into sleep and thus mess up its natural sleep-cycle rhythm. Thatâll probably make it harder to sleep later on and make it harder to jump into your day. In order to avoid the temptation, set your alarm for the time you actually need to get out of bed and enjoy a nice, deep sleep up until that very moment.eval5. Sip Some WaterYou might crave coffee as soon as youâre on your feet, but try drinking some of the clear stuff first. Water hydrates your body and, in doing so, wakes up your muscles and organs after theyâve been deprived of water all night long. Bonus points are awarded for adding a lemon into your morning cup of H2O, as the citrus fruitâs juices have been shown to boost me tabolism and energy levels.6. Eat a Bulked-Up BreakfastFirst of all, you should always be eating breakfast: It gives you the energy you need to kick-start your morning. Once youâve gotten into the habit of chowing down first thing in the morning, make a point to eat smart. Proteins take longer to break down and therefore provide more stable, long-lasting energy throughout your day. A plate of eggs will make you feel more satisfied and alert than a pastry.7. Make Your Commute a Bit More FunYou might not be cranky about work, but about facing an extra-long commute. Whether you go by public transportation or drive yourself, you can find ways to make it more exciting and engaging. In other words, itâs another means of waking you up if you know what to do.evalIf youâre driving, crank up your favorite tunes and sing them out: when you sing, you release endorphins that make you feel good, all while zapping any lingering stress or anxiety. This is perfect if your drive is long or the highways are congested: Just sing away your stress. As for public transit commuters, it might be less possible to belt out tunes from the seat of a packed bus or train. Instead, find a podcast series that you like listening to and catch up on the latest episode on your morning ride, bring a book along with you or use the time to send how-are-you emails to old friends who you havenât seen in a while. There are countless ways to make your commute more of an enjoyable time then a burden, so get creative!8. Sit, Then StandIf youâre still stuck in bed, hereâs another tip to make your wakeup easier: Carefully ease up and out of bed. You might make the mistake of rolling right onto the floor feet-first, but you deserve a few seconds to gather yourself before making a go at today.Tomorrow, roll onto your side and push yourself up into a seated position, taking the pressure off your body and giving yourself a few seconds to breathe. Then, firmly plant both feet on the floor, stand up an d go.9. CreateYou might think your mornings are too jam-packed to stray from your shower-clothes-breakfast-commute routine, but a simple activity to jog your brain post-sleep will reap myriad rewards by the time youâre really engaging your brain. You can get creative with how youâre creative: Perhaps you sketch while you eat breakfast or whip up a creative meal rather than dumping cereal into a bowl. By waking up your brain, youâll find yourself with a more excited, engaged outlook on the rest of your day. Seriously, try it.10. Put Your Phone DownThis goes hand-in-hand with a bit of morning creative time: Donât look at your phone as soon as you wake up, and donât spend all morning craning over it to check emails, social media, etc.Instead, focus on what you have to get done in the morning and other little ways to entertain yourself while doing so. You just might find yourself moving a bit more quickly and excitedly instead of sighing at all of the banal updates on your Face book feed.11. Find Your PositivityFinally, even if youâre not a morning person, you can probably find something positive about the day ahead. Focus on the good thatâs to come and you will likely notice an improvement in the way your mornings go. To that end, try adding in a few positive affirmations about how you can and will tackle the tough day ahead of you. By saying these things to yourself â" and believing them â" youâve already made serious strides toward a good day. Now, Wake UpevalWith these tools in mind, it should be a bit easier to start your day tomorrow. You just might find that, with a bit of practice, you, too, can become a morning person â" no matter what time that alarm clock rings.

Communication Tips For the Holidays The Whole Year Through
Communication Tips For the Holidays The Whole Year Through Recently I was quoted in this CNBC article on the 6 Mistakes You Should Never Make in a Work Email. It prompted me to consider when email, phone calls and meetings have served me well at work and when they havent. Read below for communication lessons learned and share your own insights in the comments. When to call versus send an email? Dont send an email when you need to give (constructive) criticism, when you need clarification, when youre upset, or when an issue or item is sensitive. Call instead. True story I remember being upset by a coworkers email that seemed to imply I wasnt getting a particular project done quickly enough. Rather than shoot back a terse, angry email, I immediately picked up the phone and called my colleague. It turned out he didnt mean to make me look bad at all. In fact, he thought I could use help and his email was meant to get other people to pitch in. Calling (over emailing) immediately helped me clarify the situation and resolve it.What if you need to meet with a colleague or boss whats the best way to get their full attention? You need to ask for permission. In other words, dont just barge into someones office or cubicle and assume he or she can drop everything to speak with you. Rather, start off by asking if they have a moment to meet with you. Asking not only shows you respect him/her, it also will give you his/her full attention. True story I had to work with the CEO at one of my past employers and often found it difficult to get his attention. But I started asking for permission to ensure he had a moment to speak with me. Once I did this and I got a yes, I immediately got his focused attention. And if he said no, I was able to ask when a good time to meet would be and come back later. This simple change in how I approached our meetings helped me get the CEOs undivided attention. Now that youve got their attention, how to conduct an effective meeting To conduct an effective meeting whether with one person or a boardroom, you need to have an agenda and a set of objectives. An agenda is the amount of time you have for each topic you want to discuss. The objectives are the what you want the discussion to yield. Examples of objectives include a decision, a set of next steps or the designation of a point person. Writing down an agenda and objectives for yourself before the meeting and sharing them in an email with your attendees will not only help your meeting be more productive but everyone will know whats expected and what the point of meeting is. True story When I was a management consultant, it was my job to run the team meetings for my client. At first, I went in just with a list of talking points of the items we needed to discuss. Our meetings ran over time and nothing seemed to get accomplished. Then I started to create an agenda and objectives for each meeting (which I sent out to the attendees ahead of time). Immediately the meeting time focused on what needed to get done and we were able to easily finish on time. The way we communicate with others and with ourselves ultimately determines the quality of our livesâ Tony RobbinsWhat communication do and donts have you experienced?
